Stuart, Florida: Martin County Deputies arrested a man who slashed an Indian store clerk because he 'didn’t like Arabs.' The clerk is identified as Shinoy Michael, a Kerala native.
Police charged Jeremiah Emmanuel Hendrix, 33, a homeless man, with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He is being held at the Martin County Jail on $40,000 bail. Police determined it as a hate crime.
Surveillance video shows Hendrix inside a Family Dollar Discount store in the 3200 block of Southeast Dixie Highway at around 4 pm, harassing and yelling at two of the clerks, who were women, the police report said.
Deputies spoke with one of the women, who told them that Hendrix was at the store a few hours earlier and became aggravated with her while she was ringing up his items. After he left the store and returned, the woman said Hendrix tried to grab her when a third co-worker asked him to leave.
Hendrix then pulled out a knife and cut Michael in the arm before fleeing. Police identified him from the CC TV camera.
Deputies found Hendrix a short time later in a wooded area four blocks away. When questioned by deputies, Hendrix said he did it and that ‘there’s no reason other than they are (expletive) Arabs, I don’t like Arabs.’
Michael is out of danger and returned home, according to Benny Vachachira, president of the Federation of Malayalee Associations in America. There are 13 stitches to his hand.
